How Softal came to own a $100,000 domain

Softal owns apps.deals, a domain currently listed through GoDaddy for $99,999.
The price makes for an exciting headline, but the story behind the domain matters more to me. apps.deals was not bought as a digital collectible or a quick investment. It was acquired to solve a problem I encountered while trying to promote one of our own apps.

The gap that inspired apps.deals
In 2024, I wanted to submit Presentify, our Mac screen annotation app, to popular app discovery and promotion platforms.
I tried Indie App Santa and AppAdvice, but both focused on iOS apps and did not accept macOS apps. I kept looking for another platform where independent Mac developers could share a genuine discount with people actively searching for great software.
There was no obvious place to do it.
That gap led to apps.deals. We launched the website in November 2024 with a straightforward goal: create a dedicated home for worthwhile app deals, including the Mac apps that were often left out elsewhere.
From one Mac app to a Black Friday destination
What began with a need to promote Presentify quickly grew beyond our own apps. Developers and teams needed a focused place to share their offers, while users wanted an easier way to find legitimate discounts without searching through dozens of websites and social media posts.
Black Friday became the clearest proof that the idea had found an audience. During Black Friday week, apps.deals receives more than 50,000 page views as people browse the latest offers and decide which apps to add to their workflows.
The quality of the participating products has grown too. Reputable apps such as CleanShot X, Paste, Superlist, Git Tower, and many more list their Black Friday discounts on apps.deals.
For a website born because Mac apps had nowhere suitable to submit a deal, that is especially meaningful. The platform now helps developers reach buyers at the most competitive time of the year, and it helps customers discover discounts from products they already know and trust.
Why the domain is valuable
The name apps.deals describes the product in two words. It is short,
memorable, and tells visitors exactly what they will find before they open the
website.
That clarity is difficult to manufacture. Combined with the audience, reputation, and relationships built around the platform, it has made the domain a valuable digital asset for Softal. Today, it is listed as a premium domain through GoDaddy with a buy-now price of $99,999.
Still, its value to us is not just the listing price. It is the platform the name has allowed us to build, the developers it supports, and the tens of thousands of visits it attracts when app deals matter most.
apps.deals started with one rejected Mac app submission. It became the place I had been looking for.
Disclosure
The $99,999 figure is the domain's current asking price on GoDaddy, not what Softal paid to acquire it. We did pay an unusually high amount compared with a typical domain registration, but we did not pay $100,000. We prefer to keep the exact acquisition price private.
